A Red, Red Rose: Celebrating Songs & Poetry of the Scottish bard Robert Burns
From A Red, red rose to Comin’ thro the rye and Auld lang syne, Robert Burns’ poetry and music is beloved the world over. Celebrating the Scottish bard ahead of his birthday, this new program from Les Délices features “shining” tenor James Reese performing eighteenth-century ballads composed and collected by the poet himself. Once you’ve raised a glass of Scotch Drink, decried Such a parcel of rogues, tapped your toes to Caledonian Country Dances, and fallen head over heels for Highland Mary, you’ll find you’ve left your heart in the highlands.
About the Artists
Les Délices (in English, The Delights) brings long-forgotten music alive for contemporary audiences through concerts in Cleveland, on tour, and through recordings and broadcasts. Dubbed “an early music group with an avant-garde appetite” by The New York Times, the San Francisco Classical Voice observed that “Les Délices can’t help but get one listening and thinking in fresh ways.” Recent projects have seen Les Délices bring their “outstanding artistry and verve” (American Record Guide) to signature programs of French Baroque music, folks songs from Baroque-era Scotland, chamber music from the Age of Revolutions, late-Medieval music, and more.

“Nagy’s deft programming and Les Délices’ flawless but laid-back execution make their music instantly accessible to modern audiences.” — Cleveland Classical
“One of the most delightful aspects of any performance by Les Délices is this exploration of the dramatic potential of pitch — how to curve, stretch or wilt a note in a way that’s emotionally resonant.” — The New York Times
